A civil wedding ceremony is for you if you value a silent wedding event that focuses on what matters – a marriage license with a few family members and friends.

You can have a civil wedding anywhere and even print a civil wedding invitation. If this sounds like something you want, we have some awesome civil ceremony ideas in this article. Read on to learn more.

What is a civil wedding?

What is a civil marriage ceremony? Simply put, a civil wedding is a legal marriage ceremony performed by a government official, such as a judge, a justice of the peace, or a civil registrar, rather than a religious figure.

The ceremony typically occurs in a courthouse or a city hall and is non-religious and secular.

Civil weddings may include the exchange of vows and rings and signing a marriage license or a marriage certificate, which legally recognizes the couple’s union.

Civil weddings are a popular choice for couples not affiliated with any particular religion or prefer a more low-key, practical, and straightforward approach to getting married.

Even though the internet is full of buoyant and huge traditional wedding ceremonies, some individuals prefer civic ceremonies. No event is better than the other, as it’s all about your choice.

Most importantly, you and your partner agree and are happy about your decision.

5 reasons to have a civil wedding ceremony

Civil weddings, or non-religious or secular weddings, have become increasingly popular in recent years. More than 30 countries recognize civil ceremonies in the whole world.

Therefore, it’s normal that more and more couples opt for a civil wedding instead of a traditional religious ceremony. Here are five reasons why having a civil wedding ceremony might be the right choice for you:

1. Flexibility

One of the biggest advantages of a civil wedding is its flexibility. Civil weddings can be held in various locations, including courthouses, city halls, parks, and beaches.

This means you have more options for choosing the perfect venue for your wedding. You can also select the time and date that works best for you and your partner rather than being constrained by the availability of a religious venue or officiant.

You may also decide whether to print a civil wedding invitation or not.

2. Non-religious

A civil wedding can be a great option if you and your partner are not religious. Civil weddings are non-religious and secular, with no religious requirements, rules, or restrictions.

You don’t have to follow specific religious customs or traditions or wait for a particular person to officiate your wedding. Also, you can tailor the ceremony to suit your and your partner’s personal beliefs and preferences.

3. Cost-effective

What is a civil wedding? A civil wedding is cost-effective. One of the biggest merits of civic ceremonies is that you don’t get to spend much compared to traditional religious wedding expenses.

You don’t have to pay for a religious venue or officiant; you can choose a simpler, more affordable venue for your ceremony.

You can also save money on decorations and other wedding expenses since civil weddings are more low-key and less elaborate than traditional religious weddings.

4. Less formal

Civil ceremony ideas are generally less formal and more relaxed than traditional religious weddings. You don’t have to wear formal attire or follow strict etiquette rules, and you can choose a more casual, laid-back atmosphere for your ceremony.

That might help to reduce stress and anxiety on your wedding day and allow you and your partner to focus on enjoying each other’s company and celebrating your love

5. Inclusive

Weddings’ civil ceremonies are also more inclusive than traditional religious weddings. Since civil weddings are non-religious, they are open to couples of all faiths and backgrounds.

In other words, you can invite a diverse family and friends to celebrate with you, regardless of their religious beliefs or affiliations. Besides, civil ceremony ideas can help to bring people together and promote unity and inclusivity.

In essence, there are many reasons a civil wedding ceremony might be the right choice for you and your partner.

From flexibility and cost-effectiveness to the non-religious nature and inclusivity, civil weddings offer benefits that make them an attractive option for many couples.

Whether you are looking for a simple and intimate ceremony or a more elaborate celebration, a civil wedding can be a great way to start your life together as a married couple.

5 ways to plan a civil wedding ceremony

If you’re planning a civil wedding ceremony, there are many ways to make your day special and unique. Unlike traditional religious weddings, civil ceremonies offer much flexibility when personalizing your ceremony.

Here are five ways to plan a civil wedding ceremony that reflects your personality and celebrates your love:

1. Conduct your research

Although a civil wedding only requires a little preparation, you can’t just show up to the court announcing your intention to wed your partner. Each state or location has its regulations for having a marriage license. Therefore, it’s crucial to check before making any decision.

Generally, civil ceremonies have the same requirements as religious ones, including fees for the marriage license, restrictions such as minimum age, wedding venue, documentation, some waiting periods, and the presence of a couple of witnesses or more.

For example, the marriage law in the US permits an individual to marry upon reaching 18 years, except in Mississippi, where the general marriage age is 21, and in Nebraska, where the available marriage age is 19.

2. Select a meaningful Location

One benefit of having a civil wedding ceremony is the autonomy it offers in terms of location. You can choose a meaningful place special to you and your partner, whether a favorite park, beach, historic building or backyard.

Also, you can have your civic wedding in any country if you know and agree to their laws. Consider the atmosphere and vibe you want to create for your ceremony, and choose a location that reflects that.

3. Write great vows

Writing your vows is a great way to personalize your civil wedding ceremony and express your love and commitment to each other.

To do this, take some time to think about what you want to say to your partner, remembering how you met, the memories you shared, and what promises and commitments you want to make to each other.

Feel free to infuse some personality into this. Remember, it’s your civil wedding, so it’s important to do it right.

4. Choose meaningful quotations or music

In addition to your vows, you can incorporate meaningful quotations or music that resonate with you and your partner in your civil wedding ceremony. For example, you can have poems, quotes, or passages from your favorite books.

You can also choose music that is special to you or your partner or invite your favorite musician to perform without informing them. These elements can set the tone for your ceremony, build a strong marriage foundation, and make it more meaningful and memorable.

5. Celebrate with family and friends

Finally, remember to celebrate your love and commitment with family and friends. Although civil wedding ceremonies are often smaller and more intimate than traditional religious weddings, you can still invite your closest family and friends to celebrate with you.

Consider organizing a reception or a small gathering after the ceremony to enjoy food, drinks, and good company.
