Should I Propose Before or After Dinner? Pros & Cons of Each

You’ve felt it. It’s time to move forward with your relationship, and you know that you’re ready to propose.

However, with this realization come many things to consider.

You just don’t buy a ring and pop the question. You want to make everything perfect, and that’s when you realize, “Should I propose before or after dinner”?

When to propose at dinner

What is your dream proposal? What is your partner’s dream proposal?

You might have discussed this before, giving you an idea of where to pop the question.

Choosing to propose at dinner will depend on several factors.

Dinnertime may be one of the most romantic settings, and most restaurants offer candlelit dinners at night, so that makes sense.

Remember that the overall atmosphere, weather, and even the proposal dinner ideas all play an important role in whether your proposal will be memorable or not.

The best time when to propose will depend on whatever feels right and romantic for you and your partner.

Once you’ve considered all the factors, it’s time to ask yourself, “Should I propose before or after dinner”?

Should you propose before or after dinner?

When should you propose? Should it be before you start dinner or after you have dinner?

Good question!

The decision when you will pop the question will depend on your preferences. The goal is to create the perfect setting for that beautiful question, a setting that is beautiful, memorable, and romantic.

“Should I propose before or after dinner?”

Both choices are actually really good, but one could be better, depending on your preferences.

Some people want to propose before dinner because they want to enjoy the food later on, which also becomes their celebration. Others may choose to propose after dinner and might even hide the ring in the dessert.

There is no definite answer for everyone since every situation is different.

Both choices have pros and cons, and you have to weigh them before choosing which one works for you and your partner.

Pros and cons of proposing before dinner

You may have seen some proposal ideas and restaurant themes online and how some propose before dinner time.

If this sounds good, it’s time to weigh the pros and cons of proposing before dinner.

3. You can invite an audience

You can invite immediate family and friends if you want. This would make it extra special.

Cons of proposing before dinner:

1. Celebration may be less intimate

If you’re going to do it in a restaurant, the celebration dinner might be less intimate as there would be strangers.

2. You won’t be able to focus on the food

After the successful proposal, you might still be too flushed when you order your food unless you have a pre-order meal, which might make it better.

3. If your partner rejects you, the entire dinner time will be awkward

If you propose before dinner and your partner rejects you, the food comes along. There might be an awful, awkward moment the entire dinner.

Pros and cons of proposing after dinner

Now, it’s time to weigh the pros and cons of proposing after your dinner.

Pros of proposing after dinner:

1. You get to eat first

You can think well if you’re full, right? So choosing to propose after dinner gives you a chance to enjoy your meal first.

2. Have a more intimate celebration after dinner

After you propose and you get your much-awaited answer, you can drink wine and bill out. Then you can choose where to celebrate afterward.

3. If your partner rejects you, you can end the day

However, if your partner says “no,” then you don’t have to stay and have an awkward dinner. You’re done, and you can leave as soon as you can.

Cons of proposing after dinner:

1. Your nervousness might become too obvious

If you are the type of person who gets nervous, then waiting after dinner can be stressful, and you might also become too obvious.

2. You might end the meal abruptly

3. Less intimate proposal

Aside from the fact that your audience would be total strangers, most of the restaurant staff would also get involved, making it a not-so-intimate proposal.

How to pick the perfect restaurant

Proposals at a restaurant can also be romantic and beautiful, but you have to choose the best restaurant that you will think could cater to your plan.

Choosing the perfect restaurant will, of course, depend on several factors.

These factors include the occasion, the date you will propose, the meals they offer, and your budget.

Don’t forget to look at reviews online and also check the menu or if they have special packages for special occasions.

Lastly, make sure that you consider making reservations ahead of time to ensure a smooth proposal.

Where should you put the ring?

Now that you have chosen the answer to the question, “Should I propose before or after dinner,” then you have to make sure you know where you will put the ring.

Traditionally, the engagement ring is worn on the fourth finger of the left hand, which is also known as the “ring finger.”

This custom originates from centuries ago when it was thought that a vein from this finger connected directly to the heart.

However, there are some people who choose to wear their engagement ring on a different finger or hand, and that’s perfectly okay, too.

Some commonly asked questions

Here are the answers to some pressing questions related to proposing to someone that help you plan out the best proposal for the one you love:

• What is the best time to propose?

The best time to ask your partner to marry you will depend on several factors in your relationship.

Some couples choose to propose on special occasions like Christmas, an anniversary, or even a birthday.

Other couples choose a beautiful location or a romantic setup. Some choose their perfect moment at a romantic dinner.

The main point is that you and your partner both feel prepared to get married and have discussed your plans for the future. You’d actually feel when the time is right, and that’s when you start planning.

Before you pop the question, make sure that you’re in a healthy relationship.

Here’s Steph Anya, LMFT, that will teach you how to spot 8 common red flags in your relationships.

• How long is enough before proposing?

Every relationship is different, so the amount of time spent before popping the question will be different.

There are, however, many factors that will affect this decision.

Factors such as age, income, length of the relationship, life goals, religion, values, and commitment to each other.

The length of the relationship alone isn’t enough to determine when to ask for marriage. It’s when you feel it and when you’re ready for it.

This is also where couples counseling comes in, as they can guide lovers in handling issues, setting goals, and even getting ready for marriage.
