31 Surprising Signs That Your Best Friend Is in Love With You

Sometimes, love doesn’t arrive loudly or dramatically… it settles in quietly, right beside you. It shows up in late-night conversations, shared jokes that need no explanation, and that comforting feeling of being truly understood.

When someone knows your stories, your silences, and your moods better than anyone else, it can feel safe, familiar, almost invisible.

But what if there’s something more beneath that ease?

Not a sudden confession or grand gesture, just a subtle shift in energy, care, and attention. These moments can be confusing, tender, or even a little unsettling. The line between friendship and deeper feelings isn’t always clear; it bends softly over time.

Noticing the signs your best friend is in love with you can stir warmth, hesitation, curiosity… and a quiet awareness that something meaningful may already be there.

Can your best friend fall in love with you?

It can happen… quietly, naturally, and often without anyone noticing at first. When two people share trust, laughter, vulnerability, and time, feelings can shift in small, almost invisible ways. What starts as comfort can deepen into care, and care can slowly turn into something more.

It’s not always sudden or dramatic; sometimes it feels like a gentle realization that sneaks in during ordinary moments.

Is it surprising? Maybe.

Is it wrong? Not at all.

Love doesn’t always follow neat timelines or clear rules. In close friendships, emotions can grow safely, patiently, until one day they simply feel different… warmer, closer, undeniable.

31 surprising signs your best friend is in love with you

Handling friendships can sometimes lead us into unexpected emotional territories, particularly when changes occur in the dynamic you share with your best friend.

Recognizing the signs your best friend is in love with you can be challenging, but certain behaviors can reveal deeper feelings. Here’s a deeper look into these signals to help you understand your friend’s emotions better:

1. They remember the little things

When someone is in love, they tend to pay closer attention to the small details that make them unique.

According to Maggie Martinez, LCSW:

Sometimes the heart speaks in subtle ways, when your best friend notices the little things about you that no one else does, love might be quietly blooming.

If your best friend remembers things like your favorite ice cream flavor, the name of your first pet, or an offhand comment you made weeks ago, it could be a sign they cherish every bit of information about you. This attentiveness shows they value your thoughts and experiences, which is often a sign of deeper feelings.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Notice whether this attention feels consistent, not occasional.
• Observe if they recall details even when it doesn’t benefit them.
• Reflect on whether they also track your emotional preferences.

2. Increased physical contact

A best friend who is falling for you might look for any excuse to touch you. This could be more frequent hugs, playful nudges, or a comforting pat on the back, more often than what used to be the norm.

Physical touch is a way of expressing affection and comfort, and an increase in such gestures might indicate they feel more than just platonic love.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Pay attention to changes, not just the touch itself.
• Ask yourself if the contact feels intentional or lingering.
• Check whether this behavior is unique to you.

3. Jealousy

Jealousy is a telling emotion, especially if it surfaces when you discuss your dating life or another person’s interest in you.

If your friend seems unusually unhappy or withdrawn when you go on dates or if you mention another potential romantic interest, it could be because they wish they were in that special spot instead.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Notice the emotional shifts that occur when you mention the topic of dating.
• Watch for withdrawal rather than direct confrontation.
• Separate concern from possessiveness.

4. Prioritizing your needs

If your best friend constantly puts your needs and happiness before their own, it could be a sign of love. This might manifest as them dropping plans to help you with something, always making sure you are comfortable, or going out of their way to bring a smile to your face during tough times.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Observe patterns of self-sacrifice over time.
• Ask if they neglect their own needs for yours.
• Consider whether this creates an imbalance.

Maggie Martinez highlights that:

A best friend in love often shows it not with grand gestures, but with a constant presence, unwavering support, and an almost protective care.

5. Future plans

When someone starts including you in their future plans regularly, it indicates that they see you as a part of their life in the long term. If your friend talks about things you’ll do together next year or even further in the future, it suggests they are hoping you’ll be around for a long time and not just as a friend.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Note how often you’re included in long-term talk.
• See if plans are casual or emotionally weighted.
• Ask yourself how this makes you feel.

6. Special treatments

Your best friend might start treating you better than they treat their other friends. This could be through more thoughtful gifts, paying more attention to what you say, or offering help more readily to you than to others.

This special treatment often signifies that they hold you in higher regard than their other friends, possibly because of romantic feelings.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Compare how they treat you versus how they treat others.
• Look for emotional effort, not just favors.
• Reflect on whether it feels exclusive.

7. Extended eye contact

Prolonged eye contact can be a powerful indicator of affection.

If your friend often looks deeply into your eyes, more so than what is usual even in intense conversations, it might be their way of connecting with you on a deeper emotional level. Eye contact can communicate a lot of unspoken feelings, including love.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Notice duration, not just frequency.
• Pay attention to emotional intensity during silence.
• Observe if eye contact softens in private moments.

8. Protectiveness

If your friend has become more protective of you, worrying more about your well-being, standing up for you, or feeling uneasy when you are in potentially harmful situations, it reflects their deep care and possibly a fear of losing you to someone else or something harmful.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Distinguish care from control.
• Notice reactions in social or risky situations.
• Ask whether it feels supportive or restrictive.

9. Unlimited support

Support from a best friend is expected, but when this support is boundless and almost sacrificial, it could mean more.

If they back every decision you make, offer help before you ask, or stand by you in situations where others might walk away, their commitment might be rooted in a profound affection that goes beyond friendship.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Watch for consistency, not grand gestures.
• Notice if they support choices they dislike.
• Reflect on the emotional cost to them.

10. Exclusive time

A best friend who insists on spending more time with you alone rather than in group settings may be trying to create a more intimate atmosphere where they can express their feelings more freely.

This preference for exclusivity can be a sign that they enjoy your company in a way that is different from how they view their other friendships.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Track preference for one-on-one moments.
• Notice discomfort in group settings.
• Ask if intimacy increases when alone.

11. They share personal thoughts

When your best friend shares their deepest thoughts, fears, and dreams with you, it often means they trust you more than others. This level of intimacy suggests a deep emotional connection that could indicate feelings of love.

They might discuss subjects they don’t talk about with other friends, showing a unique level of vulnerability and trust with you. This sharing is one of the signs your best friend is in love with you.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Observe depth, not frequency, of sharing.
• Notice if vulnerability feels selective.
• Reflect on emotional reliance.

12. Frequent communication

If your best friend makes an effort to call, text, or chat with you more than anyone else—even when they’re busy—it shows you’re a priority in their life.

This constant need to stay in touch, share details about their day, or just hear your voice can be a sign that they have strong feelings for you that go beyond traditional friendship. Such frequent communication is a clear indication of one of the signs your best friend is in love with you.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Notice who initiates most conversations.
• Observe emotional tone, not just volume.
• Check if the contact continues during busy times.

13. Special nicknames

The use of special nicknames or pet names is a tender way to express affection. These might be inside jokes or terms of endearment that have special meaning just between the two of you.

This personalized language helps create a private world that belongs only to your relationship, which could be a sign of deep affection and possibly romantic love.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Note whether names are private or public.
• Observe the emotional meaning behind them.
• Ask how they make you feel.

14. Body language cues

Body language is a powerful indicator of one’s feelings. If your best friend often has open body language around you, mirrors your movements, or faces you directly while interacting, these are signs they feel comfortable and drawn to you.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Watch for mirroring behaviors.
• Notice the open posture around you.
• Observe subconscious leaning or orientation.

15. Gifts without occasions

Giving gifts without a specific reason is a way to show care and thoughtfulness. If your best friend frequently gives you thoughtful presents just because they thought of you, it indicates they cherish you deeply.

Such gestures often indicate that they are frequently thinking about you, which can be a sign of romantic interest.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Focus on thoughtfulness, not price.
• Notice the emotional timing of gifts.
• Reflect on frequency.

16. Talking about you

If your best friend often praises you to others, brings you up in conversations, or seems proud of your achievements, it shows they hold you in high regard.

This pride in your accomplishments and their desire to share how great you are with others can sometimes be more than just friendly admiration; it can also hint at deeper feelings.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Ask how often you’re mentioned to others.
• Notice pride in your achievements.
• Observe emotional tone when speaking about you.

17. Interest in your relationships

When your best friend is unusually curious or invested in your dating life, it may be a sign they have feelings for you. They might ask about your dates or react unusually to discussions about your romantic interests.

This could stem from jealousy or a hope to find out if you have similar feelings for them, which is another sign that your best friend may be in love with you.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Watch for emotional reactions, not questions.
• Notice discomfort masked as curiosity.
• Reflect on boundaries.

18. Going out of their way

If your friend frequently goes out of their way to help you, whether it’s assisting with big projects or offering help when you’re in need, it shows a level of dedication that often exceeds normal friendship boundaries. This can indicate that they care about you deeply, possibly even romantically.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Track inconvenience level.
• Notice repetition, not one-offs.
• Ask if help feels personal.

19. Changes in appearance

When someone has feelings, they often try to look their best for the person they are interested in. If you notice your best friend dressing up more often, using new perfumes, or styling their hair when you’re supposed to meet, they might be trying to catch your eye romantically.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Observe patterns before meeting you.
• Notice heightened self-awareness.
• Reflect on effort consistency.

20. Eyeing you differently

A change in the way your friend looks at you can be a subtle yet clear indication of romantic feelings. If you catch them staring at you lovingly, or if their eyes light up when you enter the room, these are signs they might see you as more than just a friend.

This nonverbal cue is a classic hallmark of someone who holds deep affection, possibly even love.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Notice warmth or softness in looks.
• Observe reactions when you enter a room.
• Trust repeated nonverbal cues.

21. Emotional connection

One of the signs that your best friend is in love with you is a deep emotional connection. They can intuitively sense your moods and emotions, perhaps even before you vocalize them.

This kind of connection goes beyond typical friendship as they deeply understand your feelings and how to respond to them in a way that is comforting and empathetic.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Notice intuitive understanding of your moods.
• Observe emotional responsiveness.
• Reflect on mutual emotional influence.

Maggie Martinez Schulz adds that:

When your laughter, your moods, and even your silence seem to matter more to them than anyone else, it could be love disguised as friendship.

22. Desire for closeness

A best friend in love will often seek opportunities to be physically close to you. They might choose the seat next to you more frequently, stand closer to you in groups, or find reasons to engage in activities that require close proximity.

This desire to be near you often reflects a deeper longing for emotional closeness as well.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Watch seating and positioning choices.
• Notice physical proximity in groups.
• Observe comfort with silence nearby.

23. Nervousness around you

Even the most confident person can become nervous or jittery around someone they have feelings for. If your best friend is suddenly clumsy, stammering, or overly anxious around you, it could be a sign that their feelings are more than platonic.

This nervousness can also manifest as hyper-awareness of your reactions and a desire to impress you.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Notice sudden self-consciousness.
• Observe overthinking reactions.
• Reflect on the desire to impress.

24. Interest in your interests

If you’re wondering how to know if your best friend likes you, take note if they start showing up at your yoga class, watching your favorite shows, or reading books you recommend.

They might be trying to strengthen your bond through shared interests. This alignment of hobbies not only gives them more reasons to spend time with you but also topics for deeper conversations.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Track consistency of participation.
• Notice enthusiasm, not obligation.
• Reflect on bonding efforts.

25. Unintentional flirting

Flirting can sometimes be so subtle that the person doing it doesn’t even realize they are. If your best friend teases you in a playful, flirtatious way, gives you lingering looks, or frequently compliments you in a manner that could be seen as flirtatious, these could be unintentional expressions of their romantic feelings.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Observe tone and teasing style.
• Notice the frequency of compliments.
• Reflect on physical cues during interaction.

26. Making you laugh

A best friend in love will often go to great lengths to make you laugh and feel happy. They might remember and bring up inside jokes, create humorous situations, or simply be goofy to see you smile.

This effort is not only about enjoying laughter together but also about cherishing your happiness.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Notice effort during low moments.
• Observe the use of inside jokes.
• Reflect on joy prioritization.

27. Always available

Someone who loves you will try to be there for you whenever you need them, often setting aside their own needs to help you with yours. If your best friend is consistently making themselves available, no matter the time or circumstance, it could indicate that they care about you on a deeper level.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Track response times and reliability.
• Notice personal sacrifices.
• Reflect on emotional availability.

28. Affectionate teasing

Teasing between friends is normal, but when it’s affectionate and tinged with a softness that’s different from how they interact with others, it might be a sign of love. This kind of teasing often serves to create a unique bond between you two, filled with laughter and intimate camaraderie.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Observe softness behind humor.
• Notice the exclusivity of tone.
• Reflect on emotional safety.

29. Wanting the best for you

A best friend who loves you will not only support your dreams but also actively encourage you to pursue them. They will be your biggest cheerleader and may push you towards opportunities, even if it means less time together. This selfless behavior is a strong indicator of love.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Notice encouragement without jealousy.
• Observe selflessness in support.
• Reflect on long-term care.

30. Their friends know

Often, friends of your best friend can give away clues that something more is afoot. They might act differently around you, such as making knowing glances or awkward comments, or they might even tease your friend about their feelings in your presence. This external perspective can sometimes confirm any suspicions you might have.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Watch for teasing or awkwardness.
• Notice protective behavior from them.
• Reflect on repeated external cues.

31. They say it

The most straightforward way to learn how to tell your friend likes you is if they confess their feelings directly. Such a confession, whether it comes as a grand declaration or a quiet admission, indicates that they no longer want to keep their emotions a secret and are opening up to the possibility of changing the nature of your relationship.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

• Listen without rushing a response.
• Acknowledge courage and vulnerability.
• Take time to reflect before deciding.

FAQs

Handling the emotions and dynamics of friendship can be complex, especially when romantic feelings are involved. Here are concise insights into common questions about friendship and romantic feelings:

• Does my best friend have feelings for me?

If your best friend is paying special attention to you, consistently prioritizes your happiness, and seems nervous or extra affectionate around you, these could be signs that your best friend is in love with you. Observing changes in their behavior when you discuss other romantic interests can also provide clues.

• Is my best friend in love with me?

Your best friend might be in love with you if they seek more one-on-one time, show jealousy towards your romantic interests, or make future plans involving you. Prolonged eye contact and a desire to share more personal aspects of their life can also signify deeper feelings beyond traditional friendship.

• Is it okay to crush on a friend?

It is completely normal to develop a crush on a friend. This can happen as you grow closer and appreciate them. However, it’s important to consider the potential impact on your friendship.

Communicating your feelings openly and respectfully can help both of you navigate these emotions wisely, whether you pursue romance or maintain your friendship.

Where clarity begins

Not every love story begins with certainty; some start quietly, wrapped in comfort, laughter, and shared history. When friendship deepens, emotions can shift in ways that feel confusing, tender, or even a little scary.

Noticing the signs your best friend is in love with you doesn’t mean you must act immediately… it simply invites awareness. Give yourself space to sit with what you feel, without pressure or assumptions.

Whether this leads to honesty, patience, or a new understanding of your bond, what matters most is care. Trust, respect, and kindness still come first; they’re what made the friendship meaningful to begin with.
