The caption calls it the boyfriend effect. Boyfriend effect dating content is common on TikTok, and the reactions are split: some people see comfort, while others see pressure.

Maybe you’ve noticed it in your own life and wondered what it says about you or your relationship. This article explains what the trend means, where it came from, seven signs it’s happening, and how to tell whether a change feels like yours.

What Is the Boyfriend Effect?

It’s a social media trend that compares how someone looked before a relationship with how they look afterward, usually showing a more relaxed, lower-effort everyday style, like less makeup and comfier clothes.

This video showcases a viral “glow-up” twist on the trend, showing how a supportive partner can completely expand your world and lifestyle. It contrasts a creator’s limited travel history before the relationship with the massive global adventures they share together now.

Like most social media trends, it isn’t a scientific effect, and sources describe it slightly differently. This article follows the most common meaning: a more relaxed look after entering a relationship.

There’s some psychology behind why comfort shows up.

In a 2020 study in Communication Research Reports, 127 people reported on 2,537 everyday interactions. Feeling very conscious of how they came across was linked to spending more social energy and to less pleasant interactions, whereas interactions with more established partners required less energy.

Boyfriend Effect vs. Girlfriend Effect vs. Boyfriend Air

These three terms often get mixed up. Here’s how the boyfriend effect compares with the girlfriend effect and boyfriend air, using an example of each.

Term	Example	Key difference
Boyfriend effect	A before-and-after post: full glam on the left, a cozy sweatshirt and no makeup on the right	The trend about a more relaxed look after a relationship starts
Girlfriend effect	A before-and-after post of a man’s wardrobe and grooming after he starts dating	The trend about a style upgrade after a relationship starts
Boyfriend air	“It’s the boyfriend air,” said jokingly about a more relaxed, low-effort look	The older idea that the boyfriend effect builds on

7 Signs Boyfriend Effect is Happening

No single sign proves anything, since routines change in any relationship. The pattern, and how it feels to you, is what matters. Here are seven signs to watch for.

1. You spend less time on everyday styling or makeup

The routine that once took an hour before every outing now takes ten minutes, or gets skipped altogether. That can be a sign of feeling comfortable, especially if you still enjoy dressing up when you choose to. A change in routine isn’t the same as losing interest in yourself.

Here’s how it shows up:

A shorter getting-ready routine on ordinary days
Makeup or styling saved for special occasions
Still enjoying a full look when you feel like it

2. Your wardrobe has shifted toward comfort

More hoodies, soft pants, and sneakers, and fewer outfits chosen to impress. Comfort-first dressing is common in everyday life, and it doesn’t really say anything about your style or your self-worth. It simply reflects what feels good in your daily life now.

Here’s how it shows up:

More soft, loose, or casual pieces in regular rotation
Fewer outfits chosen mainly to impress
Shoes and clothes picked for ease rather than effect

3. You feel more relaxed and less “on” around your partner

You don’t feel like you have to perform or look perfect to be accepted. Being yourself around someone is a sign of trust and can make time together easier because you’re present with them rather than managing how you appear.

Research points in the same direction.

A 2024 Discover Psychology study of 220 adults in relationships found that suggests that concerns about looks may influence how comfortable, confident, and emotionally close people feel with their partners

Here’s how it shows up:

Showing up in comfy clothes without feeling self-conscious
Feeling free to be silly, tired, or unfiltered around them
Less worry about how you look in front of them

4. You have more cozy nights in and fewer dressed-up outings

Date nights at home, movies on the couch, and takeout can replace dressed-up dinners. Neither is better. Cozy time can be a sign of closeness, as long as you still make room for the things that feel special to you.

Here’s how it shows up:

More evenings at home than nights out
Plans that center on comfort, like movies or takeout
Dressing up for occasions, rather than for ordinary weeks

5. Your routines have changed, like sleep, workouts, or social plans

Relationships often change daily habits. You might share meals, keep different hours, or spend less time at the gym or with friends. Some changes are welcome, while others can slip in quietly. It helps to notice which ones you chose and which just happened.

Here’s how it shows up:

New shared habits, like meals or weekend routines
Less time for solo hobbies, workouts, or friends
Changes you notice only when you look back

6. Friends or family have commented on the change

A friend says you look relaxed, or a relative notices you dress differently. Comments can be kind or can stir up doubts. What matters is how you feel about the change, not whether other people noticed it. Take them as information, not as a verdict.

Here’s how it shows up:

Friends saying you seem happy or more relaxed
Family noticing a different style or routine
Teasing from friends about how much has changed

7. The change feels like comfort, not pressure

This is the sign that matters most. When the change comes from feeling safe, it usually feels freeing. When it comes from a partner’s comments, fear of disapproval, or losing touch with what you enjoy, it can feel heavy. Only you can tell which one you’re feeling.

Here’s how it shows up:

You chose the change, and you’d choose it again
You still feel like yourself, just more at ease
No one has pushed you toward it or made you feel judged for it

FAQs

Still have questions about the boyfriend effect? Here are answers to what people ask most often, from how it differs from boyfriend air to whether it’s a bad thing.

Is the boyfriend effect the same as boyfriend air?

They’re closely related and often used interchangeably. Boyfriend air is the older idea that someone seems less polished or less concerned with their appearance once they have a boyfriend. The boyfriend effect is the TikTok trend, built on that idea, where people post before-and-after photos to show the change.

Is the boyfriend effect real, or just a trend?

It’s a social media trend, not a scientific effect. People’s routines and styles often do change in relationships, and for many it reflects feeling more comfortable. Whether the change is positive depends on how it feels to the person.

Does the boyfriend effect only happen to women?

The trend is mostly shared by women, and the name reflects that. The underlying pattern, getting more relaxed in a relationship, can happen to anyone, whatever their gender or the gender of their partner.

Is the boyfriend effect a bad thing?

Not by itself. Some people see it as feeling safe enough to be themselves, while others say they want to fight it in their next relationship. What matters most is how you’re treated in the relationship, and whether the change feels like your choice.

What if my partner criticizes how I look?

Repeated criticism about your appearance can be hurtful and isn’t a healthy pattern. You can tell them calmly how the comments make you feel and ask them to stop. If it continues or makes you feel smaller, talking with a trusted friend or a counselor can help.

Does feeling comfortable in a relationship mean you’ve stopped trying?

Not necessarily. Comfort and effort are different things. Many couples keep showing care through time together, kindness, and attention, and choose to dress up for occasions when they want to. If you’d like to keep some things special, like date nights or favorite outfits, you can plan them together.

Comfort, Your Way

The boyfriend effect is a trend, but the feeling behind it is real: for many people, a relationship makes it easier to relax and be themselves. That can look like less makeup, comfier clothes, and quieter nights in, and it can be a sign of trust.

It only becomes a concern when the change comes from pressure, or when you no longer feel like yourself. Noticing it is a good first step.

You get to decide how you show up, whether that’s in sweatpants or a favorite outfit. What matters most is being treated well and staying connected to what makes you, you.
