10 Reasons He Likes You but Doesn’t Want a Relationship

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where a guy seems really into you but doesn’t want to take the relationship to the next level and start a relationship? It can be confusing, especially if you have strong feelings for him.

In this article, we’ll explore the top 10 explanations why a guy might say, “he likes me but doesn’t want a relationship,” and help you understand why he may be hesitant to commit. Let’s dive in and unravel the mystery behind this common dating dilemma.

What Does It Mean if a Guy Likes You but Doesn’t Want a Relationship?

If a guy likes you but he doesn’t want a relationship, it can be challenging to know what that really means. Does he just want to be friends with benefits, or is he afraid of commitment? The truth is, it could be a combination of factors.

He may say, “he likes me but doesn’t want a relationship,” because he simply doesn’t want the responsibilities and expectations that come with being in a committed relationship. He may prefer to keep things casual and avoid any kind of emotional attachment.

And that fear of commitment, it turns out, is more common and more psychologically complex than most people realize.

Research highlight: Apostolou and Tekes, publishing in Evolutionary Psychological Science, studied 453 participants and found that fear of relationship commitment was associated with lower agreeableness, openness, self-esteem, and mating performance, and that a higher fear of commitment was meaningfully linked to a greater likelihood of remaining single rather than entering an intimate relationship.

Another possibility is that he’s not ready for a relationship, “that is, he doesn’t want a relationship but wants to be friends.” Perhaps he’s still healing from a previous breakup or focused on other aspects of his life, like work or personal goals.

He may also like you, but doesn’t see a long-term future with you. Maybe fundamental differences in your values or goals make him hesitant to pursue a relationship.

10 Reasons He Likes You but Doesn’t Want a Relationship

If you’re in a situation where a guy seems to be really into you, but he doesn’t want a relationship, but wants to be friends, it can be confusing and frustrating. Here are 10 reasons why a guy might say, “he likes me but doesn’t want a relationship.”

1. He’s not ready for a relationship

This is one of the most common explanations why a guy might say he likes you but doesn’t want a relationship. He may still be healing from a past relationship, or he may be focused on other aspects of his life, like work or personal goals.

2. He’s not emotionally available

Even if a guy likes you, he may not be emotionally available for a relationship. This could be due to varied factors, such as fear of commitment or past emotional trauma.

3. He wants to keep things casual

Some guys prefer to keep things casual and avoid any kind of emotional attachment. He may love spending time with you, but doesn’t want to commit to a serious relationship.

And the type of casual arrangement matters more than most people stop to consider, both for how the experience feels in the moment and what it means for where things go next.

Research highlight: Wesche, Claxton, Lefkowitz, and van Dulmen, publishing in the Journal of Sex Research, studied 192 emerging adults and found that those in casual dating arrangements evaluated their experiences more positively than those in booty call or one-night stand situations, and were more oriented toward pursuing a romantic relationship with that partner, particularly among women.

If he is keeping things casual, it is worth being honest with yourself about whether that arrangement actually works for you. Wanting something more is not a flaw; it is just clarity about what you need, and that is always worth honoring.

4. He’s not attracted to you in that way

Unfortunately, sometimes a guy may like you as a person but not be attracted to you in a romantic or sexual way. This can be difficult to accept, but it’s crucial to remember that attraction is a complex and personal thing.

A Licensed Professional Counselor and Relationship Coach, Christiana Njoku, states that, “If he is not making any effort to take things further with you, it may be that he is not seeing you in that light.”

5. He’s not over his ex

In their book, Jhangiani and Tarry (2014) state that some relationships do break up and may cause substantial pain if a guy is still hung up on his ex and not ready to start afresh. He may relish spending time with you, but he isn’t emotionally available to you.

6. He’s interested in someone else

Sometimes a guy may like you but be more interested in pursuing someone else. It’s important to respect his feelings and not try to force a relationship if he’s not feeling it.

7. He’s dealing with personal issues

Personal issues like family problems or mental health struggles can make it difficult for someone to commit to a relationship. It’s important to be supportive if he’s going through a tough time.

Understanding your ways of expressing emotion and those of your partner can be beneficial in building and maintaining a healthy relationship.

8. He’s not looking for anything serious

Some guys may be in a phase of their life where they’re not looking for anything serious. He may love spending time with you, but not want to commit to anything long-term.

9. He’s afraid of commitment

Christiana Njoku further highlights that,

Commitment is essential and It takes a lot to be committed in a relationship.

If a guy doesn’t want a relationship, it could be because of his fear of commitment. He may like you, but be afraid of getting hurt or losing his independence.

10. He’s not ready to take things to the next level

Have you been wondering, “Why doesn’t he want a relationship with me?”

Even if a guy likes you, he may not be open to taking things to the next level. This could be due to a number of factors, such as wanting to take things slow or not being sure if you’re the right person for him.

What to Do if He Likes You but Isn’t Ready for a Relationship

Realizing that a guy likes you but isn’t ready to commit can leave you unsure of what to do next. It’s easy to spiral into overanalyzing every text or silence, wondering if patience will pay off or if you’re simply waiting for something that isn’t coming.

Here are 5 ways to navigate the situation with clarity and self-respect.

1. Communicate your feelings openly

Let him know how you feel and what you’re hoping for, rather than guessing at his intentions or waiting for him to bring it up first. Being direct doesn’t guarantee the outcome you want, but it does give you real information to work with instead of assumptions.

Here’s what you can do:

• Pick a calm, low-pressure moment to bring it up, not mid-argument or right after a disappointing text
• Use “I feel” language instead of accusations, like “I feel unsure about where we stand”
• Ask a direct question and actually listen to the answer, instead of filling the silence yourself

2. Give him space instead of pressure

If he’s said he’s not ready, pushing for commitment before he’s there usually backfires. Give him room to work through whatever is holding him back, whether that’s a past relationship, personal circumstances, or genuine uncertainty, without making yourself smaller in the process.

Here’s what you can do:

• Resist the urge to double-text or follow up when he goes quiet for a day or two
• Fill that space with your own plans and friends instead of checking your phone
• Let him initiate some of the time, so you can see what he does without prompting

3. Watch for signs of change over time

Pay attention to whether his actions shift as time goes on: does he start talking about the future, introduce you to people in his life, or show more consistency? Real change tends to show up in small, steady ways rather than a single dramatic conversation.

Here’s what you can do:

• Keep a mental note of small shifts, like more consistent texting or making actual plans in advance
• Notice whether he includes you in his world, friends, family, and future plans, not just his free time
• Give changes a few weeks to hold before treating them as a real pattern

4. Know your own timeline and boundaries

Decide for yourself how long you’re willing to wait for clarity, and be honest about what you need to feel secure. There’s no universal right answer here, but having a boundary in mind keeps you from drifting indefinitely in an undefined situation.

Here’s what you can do:

• Set a personal check-in point, like a month or two, to reassess how you feel
• Write down what you actually need to feel secure, so it’s clear even to yourself
• Revisit that boundary honestly instead of quietly moving the goalpost each time

5. Be willing to walk away if nothing changes

If real communication doesn’t lead to any movement toward commitment, it’s worth asking whether staying is serving you. Wanting someone who isn’t ready doesn’t mean you have to put your own needs and timeline on hold indefinitely.

Here’s what you can do:

• Ask yourself honestly if you’d be okay with things staying exactly as they are a year from now
• Reconnect with friends, hobbies, or goals you may have deprioritized while waiting
• Give yourself permission to step back without needing a dramatic ending or perfect closure
