Ideally marriage is about building something that neither partner could ever have conceived of on their own. It is an adventure that you never imagined. Marriage is also infinitely complex. I don't know anybody personally or professionally that entered into marriage and found that it has gone pretty much like they thought it would. This is just par for the course. Human beings are complex. Sometimes what we find is that incredibly difficult marriages are worth hanging onto. Sometimes what we find is that marriage is not worth hanging onto but both parties would like to work together as each person makes their way out of the relationship. And sometimes there seems to be no option of leaving. Couples may find that they can work together, become genuinely intimate, and thrive. What couples counseling can do is accelerate each persons understanding of what their relationship is all about and how to move forward from there.
