In marriage/couples’ therapy, it is important to establish a respectful environment from the start. My goal is to make counseling a safe place for both partners to speak freely without retaliation or fear. Inherent in that is that each person feels they are heard and neither dominates the conversation.
In working with adults, I like to use several theories, depending on the needs of the individual/couple. Some of my most commonly used are cognitive behavioral therapy, solution-focused and reality therapy.
