12 months out from wedding

Starting your wedding planning journey can be thrilling yet overwhelming. At 12 months out, you have plenty of time to set a solid foundation for a stress-free experience. Begin with the big decisions like setting your date and budget.

This is the perfect time to start your wedding planning checklist and get organized. From picking a venue to drafting a guest list, these initial steps will shape the rest of your planning process. Remember, the key is to enjoy this journey together as a couple!

What to do:

Set your wedding date: Choose a date that works for both you and your families. Consider the season, potential weather conditions, and any significant dates to avoid conflicts. Having a fixed date allows you to start booking venues and vendors.
Create a wedding budget: Outline your budget, considering all potential expenses. Factor in venue, attire, catering, photography, and other key elements. This will guide your spending throughout the planning and help you avoid overspending.
Start compiling your guest list: Draft a preliminary list of guests to invite. This will help in selecting an appropriate venue and estimating catering costs. Remember to consider both sides of the family and any additional guests like friends and colleagues.
Book your venue: Research and visit potential venues early. Once you find the perfect spot, secure it with a deposit to lock in your date. This is a crucial step on your wedding planning list as popular venues book up quickly.

What to avoid:

Procrastinating on key decisions: Delaying decisions on date and venue can limit your options and increase stress later. Start early to have a wider selection and better preparation.
Overcommitting financially: Stick to your budget to avoid financial strain. Be realistic about what you can afford and allocate funds wisely across all wedding elements.
Ignoring your partner’s input: Ensure both of you are involved in decisions to make the planning process enjoyable and collaborative. This will help ensure that both of your visions are reflected in the wedding.

11 months out from wedding

At 11 months out, your wedding planning checklist starts getting into the nitty-gritty details. This is the time to secure your main vendors and start making your vision a reality. Use this month to book your photographer, videographer, and caterer.

Begin your search for the perfect wedding dress and consider hiring a wedding planner if you haven’t already. These steps will help ensure your big day runs smoothly.

What to do:

Book your photographer and videographer: Secure these essential vendors early, as they often get booked quickly. Meet with them to discuss your vision and style preferences. Their work will capture the memories of your day, so it’s important to choose professionals whose work you love.
Hire a wedding planner if needed: A planner can help manage details and logistics, making your planning process smoother. They bring expertise and can save you time and stress. Look for someone with good reviews and experience in planning weddings similar to yours.
Research and book your caterer: Schedule tastings and finalize your menu. Ensure your caterer can accommodate dietary restrictions and preferences. A good caterer can make or break your reception, so take your time to find one that meets your needs.
Begin shopping for your wedding dress: Start looking for your dress early to allow time for fittings and alterations. Visit bridal boutiques and try on different styles to find the perfect fit. This can be one of the most enjoyable parts of your wedding planning checklist.

What to avoid:

Waiting too long to book vendors: Popular vendors book up fast. Secure your photographer, videographer, and caterer as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
Neglecting to read contracts thoroughly: Carefully review all vendor contracts to understand terms, conditions, and cancellation policies. This helps avoid any surprises later.
Rushing dress decisions: Take your time finding a dress that makes you feel confident and beautiful. Don’t settle for less than your dream gown. Ensure you have ample time for multiple fittings and alterations.

10 months out from wedding

wedding preparation checklist

As you reach the 10-month mark, your wedding planning list should focus on the aesthetic and personal touches. This is the perfect time to decide on your wedding theme, color scheme, and book your florist.

Additionally, finalize your bridal party and start thinking about honeymoon destinations. These steps will help you visualize your day and keep the excitement building.

What to do:

Decide on a wedding theme and color scheme: Choose a theme and colors that reflect your personality and style. This will guide your décor, attire, and overall ambiance. Whether you prefer a classic, rustic, or modern look, your theme will tie all elements together.
Book your florist: Select a florist who can bring your vision to life. Discuss your preferences for bouquets, centerpieces, and other floral arrangements. Consider seasonal flowers to ensure availability and cost-effectiveness.
Choose your bridal party: Decide who will stand by your side on your big day. Consider close friends and family members who support and uplift you. Inform them early so they can plan and prepare for their roles.
Start thinking about honeymoon destinations: Discuss potential honeymoon locations with your partner. Consider your budget, interests, and the best time to visit each destination. Research travel deals and accommodations early to secure the best options.

What to avoid:

Ignoring theme consistency: Ensure all elements of your wedding align with your chosen theme and colors to create a cohesive look. This includes attire, décor, and stationery.
Forgetting to consider seasonality for flowers: Choose flowers that are in season during your wedding to ensure availability and reduce costs. Work with your florist to find the best options.
Overlooking bridal party preferences: Consider the comfort and preferences of your bridal party when selecting their attire. Ensure they feel comfortable and confident in their outfits.

9 months out from wedding

With 9 months to go, your wedding planning checklist should focus on attire and entertainment. It’s also a good time to start sending out important information to your guests.

This month, secure your DJ or band, select attire for the bridal party, and plan for any necessary rentals. By handling these tasks early, you’ll avoid last-minute stress.

What to do:

Send out save-the-dates: Notify guests of your wedding date so they can mark their calendars. This is especially important for those who will need to travel. Include key information like date, location, and any accommodation details.
Book your DJ or band: Secure your entertainment to ensure a fun and memorable reception. Meet with them to discuss your music preferences and any special requests. They will set the tone for your celebration, so choose wisely.
Select bridesmaids’ dresses and groomsmen’s attire: Choose attire that complements your wedding theme and is comfortable for your bridal party. Schedule fittings to ensure a perfect fit. Consider styles that suit different body types and allow for movement.
Plan for any rentals needed (tents, chairs, etc.): Determine what rentals you’ll need for your ceremony and reception. Book these items early to guarantee availability. This includes tents, chairs, tables, linens, and any specialty items.

What to avoid:

Ignoring guests’ travel arrangements: Consider travel and accommodation options for out-of-town guests and provide them with helpful information. Make their planning as easy as possible.
Overlooking attire alterations: Schedule fittings well in advance to allow time for any necessary alterations to bridesmaids’ dresses and groomsmen’s suits. This ensures everyone looks their best.
Skipping entertainment contracts: Ensure you have a written contract with your DJ or band to outline services, timings, and payment details. This prevents any misunderstandings on your big day.

What to do:

Register for wedding gifts: Create a registry that includes a variety of items at different price points. Think about your needs and preferences as a couple. This makes it easier for guests to choose gifts they know you’ll love and use.
Plan your menu with the caterer: Work with your caterer to finalize the menu. Consider dietary restrictions and preferences to ensure all guests are accommodated. A well-planned menu can enhance the overall experience of your wedding.
Schedule engagement photo sessions: Book a photographer for your engagement photos. These photos can be used for save-the-dates, invitations, or personal keepsakes. They also give you a chance to get comfortable in front of the camera.
Research and book transportation: Arrange transportation for you and your guests on the wedding day. This includes limos, shuttles, or any special transportation needs. Ensuring reliable transportation helps your day run smoothly.

What to avoid:

Failing to communicate dietary restrictions: Ensure your caterer is aware of any dietary needs or allergies to avoid issues on the wedding day. Consider a variety of options to cater to all guests.
Overloading your registry with impractical items: Choose items that you’ll use and enjoy as a couple, rather than just filling up your registry. Practical and meaningful gifts are often the most appreciated.
