As a therapist, I chose to work with couples because I have been married for over 20 years so I know some of the challenges and rewards of being in a stable relationship. Also, as a child of divorce, I understand some of the damage and trauma a broken relationship can bring to children.
In particular, I draw upon spiritual traditions to use as strengths to maintain family relationships in times of marital crisis and separation.
In couples therapy, I begin by having an initial session with both parties. My goal is to get to know you and talk about the challenges in your relationship. Next, I schedule individual sessions with each partner. I do this to learn about your background, family history, and other aspects. The goal is to understand what’s influenced your views of a healthy relationship. Additionally, I have an assessment that you’ll both take. The assessment will inform me further about your relationship. Afterward, we review the strengths and challenges in your relationship. We’ll begin to focus on areas of need. This looks different in every relationship. I also focus on you and your spouse understanding your reactive cycle, and how it can sabotage communication. The goal is to begin to foster an emotionally healthy environment for better communication and partnership.
