My approach to helping couples in is strengths-based, beginning with questions that focus on the strengths of your relationship and your vision for what you want most in the life you share together. Building upon these strengths and what has over time drawn you together rather than apart, form the foundation for our work on the problems that brought you to therapy today.
Almost always, couples have deteriorated into communication patterns where they no longer know how to listen, to invite, to affirm to make it safe for each of them to speak honestly and openly about what they are experiencing. First, strengths and desires and next, developing ways to make it safe for each of you to speak, and listen honestly.
Improving and deepening the trust and friendship in your relationship bond is the new goal of couples’ therapy; to actually improve your ability to problem solve together. You will develop the ability to analyze positively and resolve the problems that arise between you, along with enjoying what you appreciate about each other. How differently it works when the more you each understand about yourself and your partner, the less time you spend in therapy or stuck in the ‘same old arguments’.
You will learn to navigate difficulty more gently and successfully, especially when your relationship is facing significant difficulty or challenge. I look forward to meeting you… it really does not have to be this way!
