About

Dreams do not always become reality. Adoption is not always the solution you were hoping for whether you are the relinquishing family, or the adopting family. For the adopted person and their parents, it is a complicated path navigating relationships and a multitude of complex traumatic experiences. In my work as an adoption therapist and educator, many adopted people and their loved ones have stories of seeking help, multiple hospitalizations, diagnoses, medication regimes, school and work performance issues. Longstanding struggles with depression, anxiety, attachment and addiction issues make it even harder to understand what is really going on underneath it all. Even in the best case scenarios, leading successful lives, marriages, and careers, people have come to me with questions about who they are, where they came from, that they feel something is missing. Over the past 20 years, I've seen common themes emerge, feelings of inadequency "just not good enough" the helper, the perfectionist, the peacekeeper, the codependent. Those who have worked with me appreciate that I have my own personsal experience having been adopted transnationally, transracially from South Korea. I am outspoken as an advocate for adoption reform, human rights, anti-racism, suicide prevention, and fight against the stigma of mental health.
