From my book, "Fix Your Partner in 10 Easy Steps or Less!", my relationship work focuses on helping a couple stop hurting each other and start connecting. This means breaking the negative cycle that creates hurt and distance. As they start to understand and see their negative cycle and stop contributing to the hurt, each partner can start to be available to the other for support and connection. Connection requires emotional safety - many partners don't understand what this means. Learning how to communicate means being more intentional about what you communicate. This is important to create that emotional safety.
