By the time a couple seeks therapy, their relationship has already become challenging and their communication has broken down. I work individually with each partner so that they can safely express how they feel in a confidential setting. After unloading their concerns, resentments, hurts and disapointments, it becomes easier to see what happened that caused the disconnection and break down. From there we work on learning effective communication skills. The ultimate goal is to return to emotional health and well-being as well as gain valuable relationship skills that can be integrated into their lives.
On ocassion, one person in the couple agrees to therapy but really wants to uncouple. This becomes evident early on and the therapy becomes about working through that situation toward a more amicable separation, especially when there are children involved.
