Assess what individual couple want and their willingness to work on it. Hopefully they will have similar goals. Start with individual For each and then move towards couple counseling whenever possible sometimes they're really looking for divorce counseling and that has to be discussed up front. Once it is established that botlh want to work on the marriage the goal is to provide joint therapy. Many couple are stuck in the past and want to litigate who was right and who was wrong about yesterday, last week, last year, so the goal becomes improving the communication to make TOMORROW better, to eliminate the blaming which only can be about yesterday, and regularly planning for the desired happy tomorrow.
