My overall goal of couple/marriage therapy through the lens of Bowen Theory is to assist in the couple to develop more effective options to decrease chronic anxiety, increase more effective self-management skills in relationship to important others, and increase flexiibility and resiliency to meet life's challenges. Couple/marriage therapy addresses how people differ from one another in terms of their degree of sensitivity to one another. The goal is learning how to preserve a degree of autonomy in the face of the pressure for togetherness. Common relationship issues related to managing emotional closeness and distance, sexual and/or emotonal intimacy, communication, conflict resolution, dysfunction in a partner, substance abuse, and parenting can be effectively addressed and can lead to better functioning of the individual in relationship to their important other.
