Marriage counseling is about the dynamic relationship between the two of you. It is not about agreeing with one partner and blaming the other. Relationship counseling means focusing on how YOU can change the relationship, not how to make your partner change. Communication skills and problem solving strategies are important but they are not the focal point of marriage counseling.
Men and women don’t always think, speak, or act in the same manner. I know that men want to solve problems and see results as quickly as possible. That’s why I am particularly interested in marriage counseling in situations where he isn’t too sure about the process of therapy.
Couples counseling works best if both partners are present but we can still focus on the marriage even if only one spouse comes to counseling. If that describes you, then you may want to go to marriage counseling alone! Marriage counseling alone is different from individual therapy: the focus is the marriage. Too often, counselors focus on what will make you happy and not on what will help create a happy marriage.
