I believe couples therapy is for both married couples and those in a committed relationship. When couples continue their daily routine and suddenly realize that their relationship is not as it once was, they may feel hopeless and lose interest in one another. This change may be due to life stressors of one or both partners, negatively impacting communication patterns as well as levels of comfort and trust with one another. At this time, couples will engage in a therapeutic process together in order to obtain relational satisfaction. These issues tend to vary. Some couples would like to develop a closer bond and once again recognize the important qualities that initially attracted each individual; this may lead to increased levels of appreciation and respect. In the case of divorce, therapy may also be useful in establishing healthy relational patterns when the couple has already made the decision to part ways.
