Marriage and family therapy is a complex and arduous process that requires openness and willingness to look at disagreements, conflicts, and adopting a new perspective. What you bring into a relationship is a blend of your personality, emotional reactivity, the level of your social and emotional development, and the manner you relate to others. A relationship is an investment and has significant adaptive importance. Disagreements and differences are inherent parts of any relationship, and therefore one needs to develop ground rules of how to discuss and settle conflicts. Mutual respect, understanding each other's needs, being able to empathize, and willingness to give will undoubtedly contribute to a healthy relationship. If you are planning to enter a marriage or couple's therapy, do not enter it out of fear. Try to enter with the motivation of an explorer and out of love to your relationship.
