As the others have pointed out, counselling is very important for the victim to process the traumatic experience. It helps if you surround yourself with empathizing family and friends who care for you and can provide support and even a shoulder to cry on. Surround yourself with positivity and take heart that there this a rainbow after the rain.

Yes. Domestic violence is a very traumatic experience especially for the victim and his or her family, so appropriate counselling is required to address the issue and help the victim go over the overwhelming sense of helplessness they may feel. In addition, counselling can prevent the victim from relapsing back into the behavior that encourages the abuse. These work hand in hand to ensure that the victim will not feel too overwhelmed from the experience and can in fact move on and build their lives after the episode.

Domestic violence has many long term effects that hurt survivors. Some common problems are negative self-talk and low self-esteem, trust issues, post-traumatic stress disorder, boundary issues and further abusive relationships. To get these problems under control will take a lot of hard work. Survivors may get help in many places, but they’ll need to be willing to change their thinking in several ways to find relief. Those looking for self-help will discover book stores and libraries are full of useful tools and techniques. Some may even have workbooks that aid in working through issues. Alternatively, psychological counseling is also a practical solution to those looking for healing.
