When you are pregnant you need to eat about 300 more calories per day than you did before you were pregnant. It is important to have a well-balanced diet and to take prenatal vitamins. The food you eat is the main source of nutrients for your growing baby. You will need protein and calcium for the baby’s tissues and bones. Folic Acid will prevent neural tube birth defects while iron helps the red blood cells to carry oxygen to your baby. Some excellent foods to enjoy during pregnancy include the following: Whole Grains, like fortified breads and cereals are a good source of fiber, folic acid and iron; Beans, provide protein and fiber as well as other key nutrients and minerals; Salmon, is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids which are good for baby’s brain and eyes; Eggs, should be well cooked and
provide protein, amino acids and a variety of vitamins and minerals; Berries, are packed with vitamin C, potassium, folate and fiber; and Low-fat plain Yoghurt which contains more calcium than milk.
