Everyone will have their opinions around pregnancy and birth; and they will be more than happy to furnish you with unsolicited advice. Having a well written birth plan, one that lays out your expectations and wishes – is important so that your birth experience is as positive as it can be, and theoretically, ensures that your needs and wishes are respected. One caveat however, is that birth plans will not always carry much significance in hospital settings. Midwives and doulas working in birth centers, as well as other naturalists and home-birth advocates- are going to be MUCH more understanding and sensitive to your birth plan. The hospital setting and pace follows a structure that’s meant to enhance clinical work. If a birth plan is very important to you, consider an alternative setting for having baby if your state permits it.
