The first thing many couples counselors will ask of you is to make a commitment to the relationship. If you are not committed to working out your relationship issues and staying together, no counseling or therapy is likely to fix your problems. If both parties make that commitment, though, couples counseling tends to be extremely effective. It will require work from each of you, and sometimes the road gets rough. That’s why it’s so important that both parties be committed to the process: so that no one backs out or shuts down when relationship issues stem from deep-seated injuries from the past.
