Express very clearly that you are not able to continue the relationship in that way. If your partner promises to change but after a while always falls back into old pattern consult a therapist. Abuse is a serious issue.

A therapist or someone in the church is a good starting point for anyone experiencing verbal abuse.  These professionals can give a religious or secular perspective on what steps to take to either alleviate the abuse or get out of the situation.

Spouses should not try to endure and mitigate abuse on your own - seek professional counseling with your spouse to try and end this abuse. Seek support from friends and loved ones, and know that you do not deserve the abuse, nor do you have to endure it.

In addition to seeking professional counseling, confide in friends and family close to you who will support the strength and health of your marriage. Enduring abuse alone is never healthy.

Verbal Abuse occurs in various forms, including threats, insults, or using language that demeans or puts down another person otherwise. Verbal abuse can be subtle or obvious, and it can be mutual, by two partners who verbally abuse each other, or it can be one-sided, in which one is trying to gain control over the other. Verbal abuse is the most common type of abuse; those who are victims of verbal abuse by their partners prior to getting married should seek help.  Verbal abuse is a red flag of a more serious
underlying problem, and it can yield long-term psychological damage.  Couples experiencing abusive patterns of behavior should seek counseling right away. If you notice your partner puts you down or otherwise makes you feel badly about yourself, it is a signal of a problem that will likely get worse.
