If you believe in the Bible, then marriage dates way back to the beginning of time! The Bible says that God created Adam and Eve and that "Man will leave his father and his mother and he will stick to his wife, and they will become one flesh."
Since Adam and Eve were the only humans around at that point, they couldn't exactly have someone come officiate their wedding. So they were drawn together by God in a marriage arrangement. As the population grew, the people saw a need to make these marriages official to legally protect the husband and wife.
If you're not a big believer, then you'll be interested to know that one of the first records of marriage was from 2350 B.C., in Mesopotamia. This tradition was embraced by Romans, Hebrews, and Greeks and after had more to do with business than love.
