A wedding is an exciting time. You plan your big day for months in advance, walk down the aisle, say your romantic "I do's" and then party your butt off. Then, (SHOCK/HORROR) you realize that you forgot to turn your marriage license in!
So, what do you do?
Let me start by saying... that's one big oopsie! But don't sweat it. This is something you and your spouse will laugh about one day.
When you file your marriage license, it informs the state that you are legally married. It's also required to legally change your last name, obtain immigration or health benefits, and buy a house together. All important stuff, right?
So what happens if a marriage license is never turned in? Are you still legally married? Both answers depend on where you live.
If you forgot to turn your license in, check to see how long your license is valid according to your country/state/province. If the license hasn't expired - mail it in! If it has, you'll have to reapply for a marriage license and do all of the signings all over again. Check out this article 'Marriage License Application and Requirements' for more great info.
