About

My approach to couple counseling is developmental, emotionally focused and skill based. My two over-arching goals are to help couples soften their conflict and increase their connection. Begining with a family of origin exploration, I want couples to understand that the fight between them started before they ever met. I then attempt to raise their awareness of what the "fight behind the fight" is -- are they arguing about different personality styles, unrealistic expectations, emotional disconnection, sexual frustration or the kids? Once we have identified the real fight, I then assign couples the task of becoming more emotionally granular -- utilizing greater specificity in their identification and sharing of emotions triggered by their partner. To help me do this I use the app www.moodmeterapp.com Once couples are more granular in their emotional awareness, they can begin communicating more effectively, leading in turn to greater success at conflict resolution and ultimatelyas enhanced connection.
As a musician as well as a therapist, I like to use creative approaches as adjuncts to helping couples including dream analysis, use of metaphor and the applied utilization of relevant movies about relationships. I solicit feedback from couples on a regular basis to make sure I am meeting their needs.
