6 Tips for New Entrepreneurs on How to Stay Motivated

When entrepreneurs make the leap from working for a corporation to starting their own business, one of the challenges is they no longer have another group of people around them that sets goals and deadlines. As an entrepreneur you will have to motivate yourself.

For many new entrepreneurs this is rather challenging since the entire experience is new. To make things worse, a lack of discipline and self-motivation can directly impact the business and its earnings, and thus will also affect the family of the entrepreneur.

So it’s about how you can maintain your motivation as an entrepreneur.

In this article you will read about time-tested and proven tips and tactics that can help you stay motivated.

1. What are your core values?

Why did you become an entrepreneur in the first place? What drove you to that decision?

Perhaps you care about freedom and doing things your way. Perhaps you want to create a better world through your business. It does not matter what your core values are, as long as you can identify them.

Your core values can really be a driving force for your motivation. If you know why you do something you can tap into that power. One way to make sure you have your core values aligned is by writing your own mission statement. In this mission statement you write down your business goals, culture and underlying core values.

2. Create routines

When you do something for around 60 days it becomes a habit. Habits become routines and routines ultimately shape what you do on a daily basis.

If you want to be a successful entrepreneur one of the best things you can do is create routines for almost everything. Make sure that you can rely on solid, structured routines each and every day. With routines you will not have to think about what you need to be doing next, you simply know because it is routine.

Especially the morning and evening routines are very powerful for entrepreneurs. If you wake up each morning, feeling refreshed and energized that will help you a lot. A solid morning routine could look something like this:

  • Wake up at 6.30 AM
  • Dedicate at least 10 minutes to doing any form of physical exercise (e.g. doing push-ups or pull-ups, or going for a short morning jog).
  • Freshen up, have breakfast, brush your teeth, and so on
  • Write down your goals for today in some kind of daily journal
  • And get to it!

This morning routine can help you make the most out of your day. Who wins the morning, wins the day.

3. Reward yourself

You know how a dog learns new tricks?

By being rewarded with treats after the wanted behavior is shown.

To some extent the same is true for humans. We are hardwired to respond to rewards and punishments. If you want to create a new habit for instance, it can help to reinforce the wanted behavior by rewarding yourself whenever you show the wanted behavior.

For the entrepreneur this also means that you should celebrate your victories. You should not just let small wins pass. Celebrate them.

4. Create a positive mindset

Being an entrepreneur means being able to rely on yourself. You will need to be able to get yourself in the right state of mind. A positive mindset is really beneficial for staying motivated and hungry for success.

One way to create a positive mindset is through priming. By priming you create the wanted state of mind – usually pumped up and ready to go.

A priming routine might look like this:

  • After breakfast in the morning you listen to some music that makes you feel good and motivated, listen to about 3 songs.
  • Next, go to some place where it is quite and you can be alone. Envision three things that you are grateful for today. Really visualize them: feel them, smell them. Are your starting to feel good already?
  • Last, visualize at least three things that you are going to accomplish today. Once again make sure these are strong, vivid visualizations.

If done correct priming can really help you create the desired state of mind.

5.   Tap into peer pressure

Another way to stay motivated is by using the power of peer pressure.

Use your friends or colleagues – might be fellow entrepreneurs – to help motivate you to achieve your goals. You can set a goal there, raise the stakes, assign a referee and then it’s up to you to achieve your goals or you will lose the set amount of money.

Or you could simply post your goals on Facebook and promise people you will post again in a while to share your results. You sure would not want to let down all your friends and embarrass yourself, right?

6. Have time to think

Many new entrepreneurs have the problem that they are stuck working in their business instead of working on their business. Sometimes you need time to think so that you come up with new, innovative ways to grow your business.

I hope these entrepreneur tips for inspiration will help you stay motivated. Keep up the good work!
