In a video that has gone viral, Jada Pinkett Smith was asked how hard it is being a wife and mother. Her unexpectedly lengthy answer covered just about everything from how rewarding the experience is to the struggles and internal conflicts faced. She begins by stating that her life is a paradox and goes on to say that being a wife and mother is one of the, “most extraordinary experiences, and the most fulfilling experiences in my life.”

Pinkett Smith then discusses the challenge of finding balance in her life while maintaining her responsibilities as a wife and mother. Specific areas of difficulty for her, as explained in the video, include having the freedom she wants while assisting her husband, Will Smith, fulfill his dreams along with their children. While on the topic, Pinkett Smith touches on how she finds that balance with the help of spiritual guidance and committing to do something for herself before each day is done.

Take care of yourself

A really significant point made by Pinkett Smith is the fact that wives and mothers must take care of themselves, first. Although told that a mother must sacrifice everything for her family, she has learned to focus more on herself because not making time causes an imbalance both internally and within the household.

Control your own happiness

The next point she makes is absolutely brilliant, so true and if followed, may save marriages. In her answer, Pinkett Smith says that spouses and children become responsible for a mother’s happiness when she doesn’t care for herself. As we know, in many arguments between spouses it isn’t uncommon for someone to say something along the lines of, “I have sacrificed everything for you and this family!” This is a direct result of resentment and pressure building caused by continually putting yourself on the backburner. A mother that takes control of her happiness will in turn make her spouse and children happier. The reason for this is a greater capacity to care for others caused by an improved quality of life.

No wonder everyone is talking about this video. Jada Pinkett Smith was so honest, open and taught us all a little something about marriage and family life. Take note.
