Why would you consider forgiving your husband if he: &nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/p>\n<ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drove drunk and put your kids who were in the car at risk<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gambled and used drugs despite promising not to do so<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had extramarital affairs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">watched pornography and then denied and lied about it<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">criticized, belittled and called you names, especially if done in front of others or your children<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blamed you for his anger, unhappiness and irritability<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gave you the silent treatment<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">punched, slapped or physically abused you<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complained incessantly and indicated things are never good enough<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avoided taking any responsibility for his part in your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/relationship\/8-common-problems-in-married-life\/\">marital problems and conflicts<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">got into fights at family and social gatherings<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reneged on agreements<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made plans and major decisions without consulting you<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stopped communicating and became emotionally unavailable<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">violated your privacy<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">came home hours late without notice<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">threatened you emotionally, physically, financially or sexually<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Note: this also applies to men whose wives have hurt them and anyone whose partner has done hurtful things)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The list of hurts and transgressions is almost endless. If you&rsquo;ve experienced any of these know with certainty that you have been disrespected, mistreated, violated or abused.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Painful-emotions-you-feel-after-being-mistreated-or-abused\"><\/span><b>Painful emotions you feel after being mistreated or abused<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unsafe, scared, insecure and anxious&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lonely, unsupported, uncared for and misunderstood<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li>angry and resentful<\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li>hurt, sad, depressed, embarrassed and ashamed<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>Your confidence is diminished and your self-esteem is eroded. You may experience physical ailments like headaches, lethargy, constipation, diarrhea, and back pain; you may develop insomnia and lose your appetite may as well. Conversely you might find yourself using sleep to escape or overeating to comfort yourself. The emotional eating might manifest into an eating disorder.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"So-why-on-Earth-would-you-forgive-him\"><\/span><b>So, why on Earth would you forgive him?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to get relief from anger, hurt, resentment and fear<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to cease feeling like a victim and to feel more powerful &nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to have good health and decrease depression and anxiety <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to improve your sleep, appetite, and ability to concentrate and focus<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to enhance your work or school performance and care for your child<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to move forward, heal and have peace of mind<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to know it&rsquo;s for your benefit, not his &nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please understand with absolute clarity and certainty that if you forgive him you are in no way or means condoning, accepting or excusing his behavior. &nbsp;No, not at all. He may not even necessarily deserve to be forgiven. You are not doing it for him; you are doing it for yourself. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please also understand that to forgive him also does not mean that you continue to stay in a harmful situation or hurtful or abusive relationship or that you continue to give money to him to pay off gambling debts or to buy drugs. It does not mean that you are emotionally, physically or sexually intimate with him. &nbsp;Making these types of choices is not contrary to forgiveness. It means that you are setting clear limits and boundaries and that you are defining what is acceptable to you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/forgiveness\/quotes-that-will-help-you-forgive-your-husband\/\">forgive people\/your husband<\/a> for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anything <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while using your intelligence and discrimination to know that you need to get out of the relationship and\/or set clear boundaries in it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"You-may-say-OK-I-get-it-but-how-do-I-do-it-how-do-I-forgive\"><\/span><b>You may say OK, I get it, but how do I <\/b><b><i>do it, how do I forgive?<\/i><\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Forgive Him (or Her)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consider that the other person may be very different now (if this is from your past) and that they may feel remorseful and may have learned from their mistakes or offenses<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have compassion<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">know with absolute certainty that forgiveness is not excusing or condoning hurtful behavior<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">understand what someone does and how they relate to you is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about them, not you.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consider that often people act out of ignorance and their own pain and habitual and reactive ways<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work the 12 Steps if you are in a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Twelve-step_program\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">12-step recovery program<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learn how to use the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) to help you release painful emotions and to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/mental-health\/how-to-heal-from-relationship-trauma\/\">heal from trauma<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><p>You may understandably have some strong reactions to this article as forgiveness, and whether to forgive, can be confusing and gut wrenching in itself. &nbsp;And if you decide to forgive it can be difficult to do so.
