I&rsquo;m sure that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/love\/fall-in-love\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">falling in love<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was amazing, and you believed in your heart. This was the person of your dreams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hope was to get married, have the white picket fence, and the whole kit and kaboodle. But for a variety of reasons, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/relationship\/signs-your-relationship-is-falling-apart-and-how-to-save-it\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relationship fell apart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the love that was there, the love that convinced you this was it, was not enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&rsquo;s explore what love and intimacy are, why love is not enough, and why what you&rsquo;re really wanting is true intimacy to make a relationship last for the long haul.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Types-of-love-vs-true-intimacy\"><\/span>Types of love vs true intimacy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">love, intimacy, and relationship, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there are 5 types of love.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Friendship love<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ndash; A closeness with the absence of passion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Infatuation love<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ndash; Love at first sight. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/quizzes\/love-or-infatuation-quiz\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infatuation love<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not have any commitment or sexual contact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Romantic love<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ndash; A deep liking, a passion, and intimacy that may or may not have a commitment and is usually based on physical attraction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Agape love<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ndash; The perfect love of God. God&rsquo;s love is unconditional, where nothing is needed from the recipient to be loved. You are loved and owe nothing back in return.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And of course, there is the <\/span><b>type of love between parent and child.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When referring to romantic love, the love we desire in a relationship, it is different than the agape love or parental love.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romantic love can start with infatuation but grows and matures beyond just a massive crush. Romantic love is fluid and can change. Love is a feeling and feelings can and do change over time. <\/span><b>Loving feelings create an energy and a zest for life, a sense you can take on the world and nothing can stop you.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You seek love in your life in order to experience someone who really sees you and knows you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that is not loved because over time, as you really do see someone, sometimes those loving feelings do change. I&rsquo;ve thought I&rsquo;ve been in love many times only to have those feelings change once I really got to know the person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Real romantic love, or what I refer to as true intimacy, is when you really know someone,<\/span><b> all parts of someone, the good, bad and ugly, and love them anyway.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">True intimacy and love are tightly entwined together, where one continuously feeds the other. It includes intimacy, passion, and decision\/commitment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He describes<\/span><b> intimacy as a depth of knowledge, trust, being a true self without fear of rejection, a movement from <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/relationship\/balancing-individuality-in-marriage\/\"><b>Me to We<\/b><\/a><b>, and a commitment.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> He goes onto say that love is a verb and that love is a process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A process that I see as fluidly moving toward a depth of connection that creates safety and security in being known and loved. This is true intimacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"So-what-is-it-to-be-fully-known-and-fully-loved\"><\/span>So, what is it to be fully known and fully loved?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It means being able to be vulnerable and not shamed with or by your partner. It also means your partner can reveal and expose their true self without shame from you. We all seek this depth of connection that comes from our first attachments beginning in infancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The early childhood relationship with a caregiver shapes the development of the brain and lays the foundation for future relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humans seek that same connection and sense of security that you hopefully received as a young child.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often there are wounds in those early attachments that get played out in our relationships. Nevertheless, that is the closeness you are seeking. <\/span><b>That level of care and security of being completely vulnerable and exposed gets met with assurance, validation, comfort, and care.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.helpguide.org\/articles\/relationships-communication\/attachment-and-adult-relationships.htm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> loving attachment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a partner is what I call true intimacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How-to-create-intimacy-in-marriage\"><\/span>How to create intimacy in marriage?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54322\" src=\"https:\/\/image.marriage.com\/advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/how-to-create-intimacy-in-marriage.jpg\" alt=\"Closeup Of Happy Young Couple In Love Kissing Under A Duvet Cover. Love And Couple Relationships Concept\" width=\"804\" height=\"350\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two types of intimacy in marriage;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emotional intimacy<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual intimacy<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is what you are seeking when thinking about a relationship and one that can last a lifetime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">True intimacy, in general, is when being exposed and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/313554559_On_the_Interrelationship_of_Vulnerability_and_Trust\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vulnerable is accepted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It&rsquo;s a sense of closeness that comes from being real and authentic with who you are. This is what I believe is pursued in relationships more than love.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emotional intimacy is when someone truly sees you and all the flaws and rough edges, as John Legend says in the song,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &ldquo;All of You,&rdquo;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and chooses to love you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When that is experienced, there is a loving feeling that gets anchored in and sticks for years to come. It&rsquo;s not a fleeting feeling like infatuation. It&rsquo;s solid and secure. This is true intimacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the honeymoon period is over, partners really get to see each other, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/relationship\/developing-acceptance-skills-in-a-relationship\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accept each other<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and see if they have what it takes to be authentic, seen, known, and loved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If so, <\/span><b>there is a sexual intimacy in marriage that works in conjunction with emotional intimacy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Sometimes it&rsquo;s hard to know what comes first, the emotional or sexual.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is sex important in a relationship?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I believe sex in a new relationship is simply lust and a whole lot of fun!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You expose yourself in all kinds of ways and respond to chemistry, the attraction, and passion. Deep sexual intimacy comes after the emotional intimacy is anchored in, and you&rsquo;re safe to express yourself freely, not only in everyday life but in the bedroom as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Often the sex and intimacy in marriage are where we feel the most exposed and vulnerable.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/relationship\/emotional-safety\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feeling emotionally safe<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with your partner and experiencing the assurance of the attachment creates a sexual bond that is truly what God intends when He talks about man and woman becoming one (Mark 10:8).<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This relationship between emotional intimacy and sexual intimacy creates an unending and loving connection that stands the test of time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Every relationship has its trials and hardships.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the video below, Top Rope Zeus provides some fruitful advice about facing hardships in the relationship.
