These families miss one another greatly, and can&rsquo;t fill the space between them with the hug they long for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As child therapists, we had to transition to online therapy quickly, and we have learned a lot along the way about long-distance parenting tips. The following is a list of activities that may be done with a child, led by an adult when the source of communication is done virtually (Skype or Facetime calls) due to long-distance parenting. This will help improve long-distance parent-child relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1-Notice-small-things\"><\/span>1. Notice small things<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children need to experience being seen and delighted in. They will<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">believe they are as the essential adults see them in their life. To give<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this experience virtually start with a &ldquo;check-in.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are parenting from a distance, take time to notice the child. Point<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">out freckles you see, the color of their eyes, notice their hair. Notice<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">things that are the same- <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;I see you still have those dark brown eyes.&rdquo;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notice something new- <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Wow, I think your hair has grown a tiny bit<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">since last time.&rdquo;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will help you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/resourcecentre.savethechildren.net\/pdf\/6182.pdf\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">connect to your children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> better and also give them the feeling that you are around.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2-Choose-empathy\"><\/span>2. Choose empathy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54226\" src=\"https:\/\/image.marriage.com\/advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/choose-empathy.jpg\" alt=\"Little Girl Using Smart Phone With Her Mother In The Kitchen\" width=\"804\" height=\"350\"><\/p>\n<p>When there is a secure, empathetic, and nurturing adult relationship, children learn to be close to others, empathic, and to <a href=\"https:\/\/resourcecentre.savethechildren.net\/pdf\/communicating-with-children.pdf\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">communicate their feelings<\/a>, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improving their regulation. You can provide nurture from afar!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the child&rsquo;s age: count your child&rsquo;s fingers\/toes, play peekaboo, read books together, or sing a favorite song that soothed them when they were young.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3-Share-moments-of-fun\"><\/span>3. Share moments of fun<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must engage them and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/parenting\/25-things-that-kids-love\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have fun<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create a space of shared enjoyment by playing games. For an active sport, one of the activities for long-distance parents is to get in sync with a &lsquo;mirror game&rsquo; &ndash; stand up and first have your child mirror your movements, vary the speed, then take turns!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children are known to be active and adventurous. So, encourage them to be sporty. This is great for a child who has trouble sitting still during video calls.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4-Try-mirroring\"><\/span>4. Try mirroring<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mirroring is an excellent way to increase cooperation and help kids calm their active bodies. Try this twist on the mirror game. Have legos or blocks and mirror one another&rsquo;s structures. First, build a structure, then have your child copy it. Take turns leading.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/experts\/ritamaria-laird\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ritamaria Laird<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> believes this <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will trigger their creativity and involve them in an exciting activity. Even when you are not around, they can engage in this activity anytime during the day and be involved creatively.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5-Teach-creativity\"><\/span>5. Teach creativity<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/files.eric.ed.gov\/fulltext\/EJ1070372.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">imagination<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and creating together helps the child reduce stress and aids in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/parenting\/give-your-child-freedom-of-expression\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">self-expression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it increases the adult\/child bond. Write a story together. Take turns adding a sentence, let the storyline grow with each call.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6-Be-Calm\"><\/span>6. Be Calm<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep your virtual time predictable and end on a calm note. Let the child know just how much you enjoyed their time and end with something nurturing. Tell them a story about a time when they were babies, give a virtual hug (hug yourself as the child hugs themselves), or have a special snack together.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7-Make-interesting-schedules\"><\/span>7. On that day, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/parenting\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parents and children can spend time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with each other telling each other jokes and stories. You can schedule this only once a week to avoid boredom. Also, both parties will have something exciting to look forward to.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8-Planting\"><\/span>8. Planting<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the activity ideas for kids is to plant seeds in different pots as you are in different locations. This is one of the great activities for how to make long-distance parenting work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below is an educational video for kids that explains the basics of gardening.
