My mother liked to cross stitch as I was growing up, and the messages she stitched, framed, and adorned our home stick with me to this day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The beginning of this article came from one of those stitcheries. And&hellip;how very true!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>As a <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/experts\/\"><b>marriage and family life therapist<\/b><\/a><b> for many years, I see couples every week seeking the path toward loving their mate and receiving love in return.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sadly, many have waited to come in for so long that arguments, hurtful events, affairs may have caused so much damage that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/relationship\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">repairing the marriage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is at best very difficult, maybe even impossible?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first decision is, 100% work toward reconciliation, or part ways with dignity?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compared to a disease, like say, cancer, the disease is at stage 3 or 4&hellip;likely terminal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even then, once the couple decides separation is best, we work toward the most respectful and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/separation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amicable separation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> protecting as much dignity as we can for the couple and for any children in the family who are also so impacted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Road-Less-Traveled-Timeless-Traditional\/dp\/0743243153\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Road Less Traveled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Dr. Scott Peck starts the book with: &ldquo;Life is Difficult&rdquo; A real page-turner, right? This book in the 70s was one of the most read and thought about books in the 20th Century.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How do we forge a successful marriage<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To start with, the word &ldquo;marriage&rdquo; is a blacksmithing term.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the day when weapons or farm implements were made by the village blacksmith two pure and whole metals, (remember the Periodic chart in chemistry class?), were blended by putting them together in a white-hot fire, almost to the melting point, then cooled and hammered into the shapes and purposes for which the weapon or farm tool would be used.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A small amount of each 100% pure and whole part of both metals will melt, leak, and be &ldquo;forged&rdquo; together, and&hellip;if they stayed together, they were considered &ldquo;married.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine the time, effort, care, and knowledge of how metals relate to one another. This must have taken to make a plow with one metal for handles, another metal that made the tines so that a farmer could count it being a successful marriage!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The need to forge a successful marriage<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-51554\" src=\"https:\/\/image.marriage.com\/advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/the-need-to-forge-a-successful-marriage.jpg\" alt=\"Active Seniors Riding Bike In Autumn Nature. They Relax Outdoor\" width=\"804\" height=\"350\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If life\/marriage is difficult, then why would we not get the knowledge and information needed to forge a successful marriage?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily, in my sessions, I hear &ldquo;like my mom&rdquo; or &ldquo;like my dad&rdquo; or &ldquo;in my family, we did things this way, so I do too.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This happens because we have watched our family of origin and formed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5219780\/#:~:text=Research%20studies%20consistently%20suggest%20that,conduct%20disorders)%2C%20and%20academic%20achievement\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beliefs about how to be in a relationship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the main model we have had for the 18 or more years we are being raised in our family of origin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>We are copycat beings; we often go on automatic pilot, wonder why others do not do things the &ldquo;right way,&rdquo; and, for most of us, our family of origin did not model <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/relationship\/resolve-conflict-in-marriage\/\"><b>how to resolve differences<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To &ldquo;forge&rdquo; a successful marriage, the white-hot fires, hammerings are the place where the real work is done to find win-win solutions to the often minor things we spend vicious cycles of time arguing about in our most important relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And&hellip;our children are watching and will copy what they see in their futures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, now we have two pure and whole people trying to get &ldquo;other&rdquo; to see it &ldquo;my way,&rdquo; which, of course, is the &ldquo;right way.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Also watch:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OFWk9x7172Y\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>Final thoughts<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therapists working to help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/relationship\/how-to-forge-a-successful-marriage\/\">forge successful marriages<\/a> spend most of their time helping couples learn the <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strategies to maintain healthy relationships<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and see many ways that life could be processed, to offer each other love, shared power or control, freedom, and, most importantly, fun<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>When couples come to me, of the marriage vows most marriage ceremonies incorporate into the promises, the one that is no longer felt or followed is to &ldquo;honor and cherish&rdquo; one another.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We do not &ldquo;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/love\/fall-in-love\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fall in love<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&rdquo; we climb rung by rung, hot fire and hammering by hammering. To be successful, like the blacksmith&rsquo;s process, great care is put into the process for the &ldquo;tool\/relationship&rdquo; to become a successful marriage where honor and cherishing are felt daily.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We felt this when we were dating, before &ldquo;life&rdquo; like how to spend time, money, how parenting, jobs, tasks all got in the way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">key to a happy marriage is &lsquo;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NEVER STOP DATING!&rsquo; By this, I mean speak compliments often, when there are problems, work in respectful ways to find mutually <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/relationship\/compromises-in-a-relationship\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agreed upon compromises<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Share thoughts and feelings respectfully out loud. What we think or feel can only be known through our words out loud.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, forging a successful marriage takes two &ldquo;blacksmiths&rdquo; forging a win-win honoring and respectful bond for both parties in the relationship loving and being loved in a successful marriage.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false,"raw":""},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To love&hellip;and be loved&hellip;is the greatest joy on earth.
