And, what does a sex therapist do?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, like other, more traditional forms of psychotherapy, it is &ldquo;talk only.&rdquo; The difference is that a sex therapy session is specifically focused on helping couples or individuals, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/physical-intimacy\/how-to-fix-sexual-problems-in-a-marriage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overcome sexual difficulties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reasons a couple, or an individual, might seek therapy are many and varied. It could be anything from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/communication\/top-10-causes-of-relationship-communication-problems\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">communication issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, performance anxiety, inability to reach orgasm, infidelity, aging, or different libidos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two factors determine if sex therapy is right for you. One, if there are lasting sexual difficulties in the relationship (or individual&rsquo;s sex life), and two, if both partners are willing to seek help.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Find-the-right-sex-therapist\"><\/span>Find the right sex therapist<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first step of this journey is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/therapy\/how-to-find-the-best-sex-therapist\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finding the right sex therapist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Be sure whoever you select is not only licensed but also explicitly trained and accredited in sex therapy.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also important that both partners feel comfortable working with him or her. Most people aren&rsquo;t comfortable <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/communication\/start-sexual-communication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">talking about sex with their own partners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, let alone with a complete stranger so that you may feel anxious at first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>But fear not, sex therapists are trained professionals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They understand that this is a new and uncomfortable experience for most people and will do their best to put you at ease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally, if you are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/therapy\/how-to-find-the-best-sex-therapist\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seeking sex therapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;as a couple (which for the rest of this article, we will assume you are doing), expect to attend your first session together. Following that, each partner will likely meet with the therapist individually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This way, the therapist will be able to gain a comprehensive understanding of the relationship from all perspectives. However, there is no one size fits all approach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal is to help you move through sexual issues in order to have a fulfilling relationship and pleasurable sex life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Expect to be assigned homework, something the two of you will be working on alone and at home.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Homework will be practical and educational and will require time and energy outside of therapy sessions.
