Fist bumps, hip bumps, and side-hugs are out of the question!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your partner at home is &ldquo;safe,&rdquo; but the idea of hugging them has lost its appeal. Instead, your mind turns to the cashier at the grocery store for some instant love.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hopping on a plane to Jamaica together, when the uncertainty of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/diseases\/novel-coronavirus-2019\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is over, suddenly seems like an exciting idea. But, wait a minute. The cashier at the grocery store?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What&rsquo;s she got that your partner at home is lacking? Find them, look them in the eye, and smile!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like a &ldquo;horizontal strange loop&rdquo; (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/153510.Can_Love_Last_\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mitchell, p.76<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), where our internal and external experiences are continually being reshaped by each other, when you smile at your partner, not only will they feel the connection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, when they smile back, you&rsquo;ll feel it, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next thing your friendly cashier will do is &lsquo;<\/span><b>talk&rsquo; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to you. Specifically, she&rsquo;ll <\/span><b>ask a question<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &ldquo;What do you think about the spicy hummus?&rdquo; or &ldquo;How are you staying healthy during COVID-19?&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like taking notice, asking questions is an easy way to feel connected. Couples therapy experts Julie and John Gottman developed the concept of &ldquo;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gottman.com\/blog\/build-love-maps\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Love Maps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gottmans research showed that resilient couples &ldquo;developed a &ldquo;map&rdquo; of their relationship and its history &ndash; one that embraces each person&rsquo;s concerns, preferences, experiences, and reality.&rdquo; (Gottman &amp; Gottman, 2019).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They decided to develop an exercise where couples ask each other open-ended questions. For example, what is your favorite season? What do you dream of achieving in the next ten years?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/physical-intimacy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">favorite position for making love<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? So, <\/span><b>after you&rsquo;ve acknowledged your partner with a smile, ask them a question or two.
