The ironic part is that I have never been married.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, I have listened to many clients over the years who were facing a conflict in marriage that could be traced back to communication issues in relationships, or rather a lack of communication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Miscommunication in marriage<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two most common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/communication\/common-communication-problems-in-marriage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relationship communication problems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I have seen with individuals and couples have to do with one partner assuming or expecting their mind to be read.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other relationship conflict is simply not taking responsibility for a mistake of any kind, such as saying and meaning &ldquo;I&rsquo;m sorry&rdquo; or &ldquo;I messed up.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you expect a certain result without clearly communicating your intentions, this can cause consequences going as far as resenting the other person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Poor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/communication\/communication-failures\/\">communication as a cause<\/a> of conflict is very common in relationships.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4852543\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has even suggested that the effectiveness of communication in marriage is a predictor for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/relationship\/marriage-satisfaction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">martial satisfaction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One client I met had a particular desire to be appreciated. Who doesn&rsquo;t?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This client has made the assumption that if he provides a certain level of care, this exact act should be reciprocated. When this does not happen, he will get very angry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This person is essentially assuming, &ldquo;since I do this, then I should get this back in return.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With no communication in marriage, when the person is not getting back what they assume they should, not only is this person angry, but the other party may very well feel <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/romance\/dont-take-your-spouse-for-granted-four-things-to-say\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taken for granted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, causing resentment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Fix communication in a relationship<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-47760 size-full\" title=\"Fix communication in a relationship\" src=\"https:\/\/image.marriage.com\/advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/fix-communication-in-a-relationship.jpg\" alt=\"Beautiful Couple Riding A Carousel Smiling And Happy\" width=\"804\" height=\"350\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mind reading thoughts usually begin with &ldquo;should statements&rdquo; such as &ldquo;you should act this way when this happens&rdquo; or &ldquo;you should feel a certain level of gratitude each time I do this.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if an event or the same situation has been repeated over a number of years, still it never hurts to fully clarify their intentions and desires for the other person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should statements come off as the other person invalidating your feelings?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;You don&rsquo;t feel like that&rdquo; or &ldquo;you&rsquo;re just too sensitive&rdquo; is not only hurtful but can cause repercussions for the person as time passes, thinking their way of thinking is wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Also watch:<\/strong> What Is a Relationship Conflict?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZN8D1j71ZGk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>A person&rsquo;s feelings are always valid, and ideally, they should feel free to express what they are feeling.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/relationship\/accepting-responsibility-in-relationships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A person not taking responsibility for their actions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> communicates their inability by saying, &ldquo;I messed up.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When someone blames another person when they are, the clear culprit marginalizes the other person, which in turn causes the other person to feel frustrated, causing a chasm between the two.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriage.com\/advice\/communication\/3-reasons-why-a-lack-of-communication-in-marriage-can-be-detrimental\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lack of communication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, if this person does not feel free to voice their side of the story, over a period of time, they feel they have no voice and that what they say or think does not matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claiming responsibility for something that went sideways shows care for the other person and validates the other person&rsquo;s feelings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you take responsibility, you are taking a burden off of yourself, and the rest falls into place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My parents were married for 48 years before my mother passed away due to Alzheimer&rsquo;s disease. They definitely had their share of arguments, but both were able to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/how-apologizing-can-improve-your-marriage_b_590bb04de4b056aa2363d355\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apologize to the other<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> afterward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My father still has some expectation that others should know what he is thinking without him verbalizing his expectations.
