Same-Sex Marriage – Bible’s Point of View
In today’s world of symbolizing rainbows and the LGBT community, people can lose track of reality and religion both at the same time. The minds of today’s youth are functioned in a way that when something does not agree with their point of view, they refuse to accept it.
When it comes to homosexuality and same-sex marriage, the Bible has left no doubt for the readers and has made it very clear. Even though homosexuality is a controversial subject today but it is not a new issue for the churches.
Based on multiple contexts from the Bible it can be seen clearly that homosexuality is a sin and is greatly frowned upon but many people have misconceptions about this.
What does the Bible say about homosexuality?
Same-sex marriages have been mentioned in the bible not only once but multiple times.
The Bible even claims to disinherit homosexuals from the kingdom of God. Some common bible verses regarding homosexuality are:
Leviticus 18:22
You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.
Romans 1:26:27
“For this reason, God gave them up to dishonorable passions.”
For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.”
Timothy 1:9-10
“Understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine.”
With the above-mentioned verses, it is clear to see that Holy Book has rejected the adjoining of two men together and two women together.
These verses clearly show that homosexuals are considered equal to liars, sexually immoral and murderers.
There is also another verse that rejects men from wearing women’s clothes and women from wearing men’s clothes.
God has claimed to banish homosexuals from his kingdom and to have a punishment so fierce waiting for them that they will not be able to handle it.
What are the common misconceptions regarding same-sex marriage?
Here are some common misconceptions regarding same-sex marriage and what the Bible says.
Jesus did not speak about same-sex marriage which makes him open to it
This argument is based on silence and silence does not take place in a vacuum.
Jesus has addressed and discussed marriage in Mark 10:6-9 and Matthew 19:4-6 and has used both Genesis 1:26-27 and 2:24 to describe it. In these verses, it is clearly defined by Jesus and affirmed that marriage is between a man and women.
These verses are a reflection of the fact that God has created men and women for each other.
According to this definition, same-sex marriage is excluded. If Jesus wanted to extend the marriage right for homosexuals, this was his opportunity to do, but he did not. This clearly shows that homosexual marriages are not supported by the bible.
The Old Testament allowed all kinds of marriages
Now when looking at the scripture, we see that the in the past marriages, polygamy has been portrayed as social chaos and are not described as something good.
Also, the New Testament narrows down the scope of the option to a single monogamous union, but this union is between a man and women. This also clearly rejects the idea of a homosexual relationship.
When it comes down to Bible point of view on same-sex marriage, it can be cleared from the above verses that the Bible frowns upon such marriages.
Homosexuality is rejected in the Bible multiple times and is not considered normal.
Nonetheless, people do have the right to choose who to live with and who to love. Each individual is morally responsible before God for their own mistakes and the choice they make.
Whether heterosexual or homosexual, in the end only He can judge us for how we lived with our sexuality despite the national laws. The plea that today’s church make is not due to hate or fear but due to the genuine belief; how we live in this world in our relationship will affect our society.
The bottom line
As individuals, it is important that we choose wisely and seek help from the book of God when deciding what is right and what is wrong.
God’s image of male and female shows that there is something great and sacred between a marriage between a man and women- something that makes this marriage incredibly unique among all human bonds.
