Marriage is common in the military, but so is divorce. When young couples get married in the military they don’t realize that there is a lot to sacrifice.
They also marry young, some marry right out of Boot camp. Some have been dating for a while before their significant other went off to Boot camp while many met during boot camp and decide to marry.
During boot camp, the military discusses their benefits such as insurance, marriage benefits and benefits of having kids. Servicemen hear about the benefits of being married which include more money and living off base among other things.
They hear about them but don’t realize how hard it will be to maintain that healthy relationship.
Here are the ways to keep and maintain that healthy relationship while at home and on deployment:
1. Create rituals
Routines and rituals can improve and strengthen relationships.
Something simple like a kiss before work, breakfast in bed during the weekends, having a date night every week can maintain a healthy relationship.
2. Surprise each other
Romance should be an ongoing part of your relationship, not just special occasions.
Surprising your significant other with flowers is great but why not surprise them with something else. Surprising them with tickets to a local event, something that they have been hinting about.
Just being thoughtful with the surprise helps a lot.
3. Be active together
A couple that works out together stays together.
It helps you feel better about yourselves, as well as strengthens your relationship. Talking walks after dinner together, going to the gym together can strengthen your relationship.
4. Plan for deployments
The service member is usually given a couple of months to prepare for the deployment. During this time you should discuss the important things such as finances if you have kids who will take care of them when necessary.
5. Discuss how to stay in touch during deployment
Emails, phone calls, video-chat and regular mail are just a couple types of communication that can be done.
Also, remember that when deployed the husband or wife will be extremely busy. Talk about what options are most easily available during the deployment. This could be different depending on the branch he or she is serving.
6. Send care packages
All service members enjoy care packages.
Care packages deliver a little piece of home to your deployed spouse.
Be creative. Include treats such as homemade cookies, batteries, hygiene products such as soap, toothbrushes and towels, also include items that have special meaning for both of you.
